Reiki

Reiki SymbolsReiki [ray-key] is a two part Japanese word, rei meaning spirit, soul or aura and ki meaning energy. Many take it to literarily mean a spiritual energy. However, essentially it is a feeding of cosmic universal energy into a person’s whole being – Mind, Body and Soul.

Developed in Japan over a century ago by Mikao Usui (1865-1926). It evolved from his own research based on the various Eastern treatment systems around at the time, and followed his Buddhist beliefs.

Reiki is a complementary therapy and holistic treatment modality, which can aid healing in the many parts that make up an individual person on a physical, emotional and spiritual level, by providing the optimal conditions in which a person can heal themselves.

It is not based on a need to have any spiritual or religious belief or background, but more on an acceptance of treating the persons’ whole energy being. Any and every part of a person can suffer from dis-ease.

Reiki in Practice

Reiki practitioners are not healers. Parctitioners are channels, through which the energy for healing can be passed on to others. Think of Reiki practitioners as TV antennas, they pick up the energy and pass it on to the person receiving the treatment. A TV can pick up a signal without the antenna. However, often there is interference and blockages to the signal being received. Poor signals often prevent a clear picture from being received. Likewise, we tend to have blockages in our own healing processes. A Reiki practitioner can assist in bypassing these.

The practitioner places their hands on or above the area of the body that requires treatment. Reiki tends to be a hands on therapy. However, it can also be given hands off, if that is your preference. In the Western World, even with a hands on treatment, certain areas of the body are treated in the hands off method.

Different people experience the treatment in different ways, so there is no substitute from actually experiencing it for yourself.

As the name complementary therapy implies, it is not a replacement for or an alternative to seeing your medical physician, but works alongside the recommendations and directions of your medical physician.
